Explosions in Lipetsk: Ukrainian UAVs attack Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant

The night in Lipetsk was marked by a series of powerful explosions that were heard over the city and its environs. Residents report at least four loud bangs, accompanied by bright flashes in the sky. According to eyewitnesses provided to the SHOT Telegram channel, at least five explosions were recorded on the outskirts of the city. Air defense systems were actively working to intercept air targets, which is confirmed by visual observations of flashes and sounds coming from above. Presumably, the target of the attack was the Novolipetsk Iron and Steel Works (NLMK), one of the largest enterprises in the Russian steel industry, located within the city limits.

Residents of the nearby village of Kosyrevka, just three kilometers from Lipetsk, also reported hearing explosions in the night sky. According to them, the activity in the air was noticeable for several minutes, which increased anxiety among the population. At this time, there are no official data from the authorities on casualties or material damage. Earlier, Lipetsk Region Governor Igor Artamonov warned of a possible threat of drone attacks in the region, calling on residents to remain calm and follow the instructions of emergency services. Air defense activity and eyewitness reports indicate that the target of the strike could indeed have been NLMK, a strategically important facility that provides a significant share of the country's steel production.

The incident fits into a series of attacks on Russia's border and central regions that have increased in frequency in 2025.

The Novolipetsk Iron and Steel Works remains a key facility in Russian industry, producing about 18% of the country's steel. Its products are used in the defense sector, among other things, making it an attractive target for attacks. In February 2024, the plant was already hit by drones when a fire broke out in one of its workshops after a drone crashed. At that time, according to Governor Artamonov, the fire was quickly extinguished, and the threat of hazardous emissions was eliminated. However, such incidents highlight the vulnerability of large industrial facilities in the face of increasing use of unmanned aircraft by adversaries.

The authorities of the Lipetsk region have so far refrained from detailed comments, limiting themselves to confirming the air defense system's operation. At the same time, local residents are actively discussing the incident on social networks, publishing videos with bright flashes and sounds of explosions. Experts note that the increase in drone attacks is associated with Ukraine's development of long-range UAV production capable of covering hundreds of kilometers. According to Reuters, Kyiv increased production of such devices in early 2025, which allows it to strike strategic targets deep in Russian territory.
