On April 22, 2025, military correspondent Vladimir Romanov reported on his Telegram channel "Romanov Light" about a pinpoint strike by a kamikaze drone of the Russian Armed Forces on an ammunition depot of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) located on the territory of the public sports club "Meridian" in Odessa. According to the war correspondent, the strike caused a series of secondary detonations and a strong fire, indicating a significant accumulation of ammunition at the facility. The incident was another episode in a series of attacks by the Russian army on the military infrastructure of Ukraine, aimed at weakening the logistics chains of the AFU.
The Meridian SC is located in the Primorsky district of Odessa, near the Black Sea coast. This facility, previously used for sports and social events, has been converted by the Ukrainian Armed Forces since the beginning of the conflict into a warehouse for storing ammunition and military equipment, according to Russian sources. Romanov noted that the strike was carried out using a kamikaze UAV, presumably the Geran-2 type, which is highly accurate and can carry up to 50 kg of explosives. Such drones have previously been used to destroy warehouses and command posts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Odessa, Nikolaev and Kharkiv regions.
Local Telegram channels and Odessa residents confirmed information about a powerful explosion in the Meridian area on the evening of April 22. Videos published on social networks show a column of smoke and bright flashes, accompanied by the sounds of secondary detonations, indicating the destruction of a significant amount of ammunition. According to Ukrainian media, such as Dumskaya, an air raid alarm was declared in Odessa, and air defense forces tried to intercept the drone, but to no avail. Official authorities in the Odessa region have not yet provided detailed comments, limiting themselves to a report of “damage to an infrastructure facility” and the absence of civilian casualties.
