The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that between 13:50 and 19:00 Moscow time on 5 July 2025, 48 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles were destroyed by air defence systems on duty. The attack affected eight regions of the country: 17 drones were shot down over the Bryansk region, 11 over the Oryol region, 5 over the Smolensk, Kaluga and Moscow regions, including two drones heading to Moscow, 2 over the Kursk region and the Republic of Crimea, and one over the Yaroslavl region. This incident was part of an escalation of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian regions, which had serious consequences for civilian infrastructure and increased tensions in border areas.
In the Moscow region, as the capital's mayor Sergei Sobyanin noted, two drones heading to Moscow were intercepted on approach, which made it possible to avoid serious consequences. In the Kursk region, which remains one of the most vulnerable zones due to its proximity to the border with Ukraine, local authorities have introduced additional security measures.
Attacks by Ukrainian drones on Russian regions are becoming more frequent. According to Avia.pro, on the night of July 5, air defense forces destroyed another 94 drones over 15 regions, including the Voronezh, Belgorod, and Rostov regions. These attacks, according to analysts, are aimed at weakening Russia's military infrastructure, including logistics and production facilities.
