Zelensky proposed that the West transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded that Western countries provide Kyiv with nuclear weapons if Ukraine abandons its intention to join NATO. He said this on February 4, 2025, speaking at an international security conference in Brussels.

The Ukrainian leader said the country was left in a vulnerable position because it had not received real security guarantees after giving up its nuclear arsenal in 1994.

The Ukrainian President suggested that Western countries review their security policy in Eastern Europe and recognize the need to strengthen Ukraine's defense capability. He also noted that an alternative could be the mass transfer of modern missile systems and aircraft to Kyiv.

Zelensky has previously repeatedly raised the issue of Ukraine's security guarantees in his speeches. In an interview with the Italian publication Il Foglio, he said that Ukraine's renunciation of its nuclear arsenal was a "mistake" and stressed that in today's realities the country needs effective defense mechanisms.
