The women's ski marathon in Sochi ended in tragedy: the athletes were crushed during a storm
Today in Sochi there was a mass race among female skiers, which ended in real tragedy. Due to the terrible storm that swept through the city, some of the athletes received serious injuries, including open fractures. Despite this, the judges did not think of canceling the women's start, which led to even more tragic consequences.
According to eyewitnesses, during the race visibility was almost zero, and the snow rose in columns. In such conditions, the skiers could barely move, let alone compete. However, the judges decided not to cancel the race, which led to some of the athletes getting caught in the snow.
The search and rescue operation lasted several hours. Rescuers managed to find and transport all the injured athletes to the hospital. The condition of some of them remains serious, and doctors are fighting for their lives.
Many experts criticize the race organizers for not thinking of canceling the women's start, despite the obvious risk of injury. In their opinion, these people are responsible for the lives and health of athletes.
“It is simply unforgivable that the judges did not cancel the women’s start, despite the terrible weather conditions. They endangered the lives and health of the athletes in order to hold the competition. This is unacceptable,” said one of the experts.
