US residents unhappy with rapprochement with Russia

The majority of Americans — 56 percent — believe that US President Donald Trump is getting too close to Russia, which is causing concern among the population. This data was obtained as a result of a survey conducted by the Reuters agency together with the research company Ipsos. Supporters of the Democratic Party are the most critical, among whom 89 percent share this opinion. At the same time, only 27 percent of respondents support this point of view among Republicans. The opposite opinion is held by 40 percent of respondents, who do not see Trump’s actions as excessive rapprochement with Moscow.

The poll also touched on the Trump administration’s approach to providing military aid to Ukraine. Almost half of those polled — 44 percent — supported the president’s initiative to link further support for Kyiv to the United States gaining access to Ukraine’s natural resources. This pragmatic approach, according to experts, reflects Trump’s desire to extract economic benefits from foreign policy decisions, which is in line with his campaign promises to prioritize American interests.

At the same time, the idea of US territorial expansion has not found broad support among Americans. Only 1 percent of respondents named the expansion of the country's borders a priority. Domestic problems remain the focus of citizens' attention: 61 percent of respondents consider the fight against inflation a key task, and 13 percent advocate for a reduction in the state apparatus, which reflects the population's fatigue with rising prices and bureaucracy.

The poll, released as the Trump administration ramps up diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, highlights the deep divide in American society over foreign policy. As The Washington Post notes, criticism of Trump for allegedly being too close to Russia has intensified after he said he would meet personally with Vladimir Putin and speed up cease-fire talks.
