The Bell UH-1 helicopter family built since the end of World War II in more numbers than any other military aircraft, they were operated in the Air Force of various countries more than other types. It is based on the prototype XN-40, which was built by Bell in response to the need of the US Army in general-purpose helicopters and for the evacuation of the wounded. The first serial helicopter HU-1A, this designation it received later, went into operation at the end of the 1950-ies. In 1961, Bell has finalized the design and created the 205 model helicopter, using a longer fuselage and a powerful engine.

As a result, the helicopters UH-1D / H became the most popular in the military - they remained in production until the year 1986. Only in the US Army helicopters were delivered 2008 modification D. Base Airborne units during the Vietnam War - the helicopter "Iroquois» (Iroquois) during the war and armed with a variety of machine guns as fixed in hanging containers and manually operated unruly and used role helicopter artillery battery.

Among further modifications were helicopters, equipped with two engines for naval, anti-submarine radar to search for the sea, as well as a greatly increased transport helicopter 17 soldiers - the original UH-1A could accommodate only six. Still widely exploit the Bell UH-1 helicopter today in its many versions, will undoubtedly play an important role in the military and in the XXI century. A large number of "Iroquois" helicopters freed from military service have been sold to private customers primarily in the US, where they perform a variety of work.

Technology, which is primarily associated with the Vietnam War, is an American helicopter Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Iroquois). At the time, the helicopters are very well in Korea. This prompted the US command to pay special attention to them.

In the early 50s, a competition was held to create a light multipurpose helicopter with the ability to install machine gun and missile weapons. In 1955, the Bell Helicopter Company project was recognized as the best option.

The first prototype (Model 204) was equipped with a turboshaft engine Lycoming T53. The first flight of the prototype took place in October 20 1956, in Fort Worth (Texas). Army variant designated as HU-1 Iroquois (later UH-1). In mass production went UH-1A helicopters with engine Lycoming T53-L-1A (770 l. With.).

The Bell UH-1 Iroquois is a classic single-rotor helicopter with a two-bladed main rotor and a two-bladed tail rotor. The fuselage is semi-monocoque, consisting of a two-seater cockpit, a cargo compartment and a tail boom. The functions of the landing device are performed by steel skis. The power plant is located in the upper part of the fuselage and consists of one or two engines, depending on the helicopter modification. The fuel system consists of two tanks (625 liters), which are located behind the cockpit. The helicopter can carry machine gun and missile weapons.

Over time, new modifications of this machine appeared. In 1961, the UH-1B began to enter the army, on which the T53-L-5 engine (960 hp) was installed. In 1963, the US Marine Corps received UH-1E helicopters, which were equipped with more modern radio equipment. In 1965, a new modification of the vehicle, the UH-1C, appeared, which featured an improved main rotor design. The UH-1D featured a new fuselage design that increased the volume of the cargo compartment. Since 1965, attempts have been made to install two engines on the UH-1. The result was a modification of the UH-1N with two Pratt & Whitney PT6T-3 engines (with a total output of 1800 hp). "Iroquois" is one of the most massive helicopters in the history of American aviation, more than 8000 units were built. The machine was exported and licensed abroad.

The range of applications of this helicopter is very wide, it is used extensively in military and civil aviation around the world. He lit up in many military conflicts as a helicopter landing and fire support.
