Helicopter "Wessex" HSS1, built in the United States on the basis of the helicopter S58, made the first flight 17.05.1957 of the year. The first flight of the UK-made Wessex HAS1 No. XL727 took place at 20.06.1958. In April, 1960 began to be mass-produced.

One instance of the S58 helicopter from Westland was modified and imported first by installing a 820kW / 1100l.s TVD, and then on pre-production and experimental machines, by using 1081kW / 1450l motors. The first copy of the series entered service with the Royal Navy 04.07.1961 UK.
