76-year-old Russian scientist convicted of treason

A Russian scientist was sentenced to seven years in prison for treason against the state. The court announced the verdict and found him guilty of committing a crime under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (high treason).

Professor of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Kuranov received a seven-year sentence for treason.

The St. Petersburg City Court sentenced Alexander Kuranov, a 76-year-old local university professor and director of the Research Enterprise for Hypersonic Systems (NIPGS), to seven years of strict regime in a penal colony for high treason. Information about this was disseminated by the head of the United Press Service of the city courts, Daria Lebedeva, through her Telegram channel. In addition, he was ordered to pay a fine of 100 thousand rubles. 

“The St. Petersburg City Court announced the verdict against Alexander Leonidovich Kuranov, who was found guilty of committing a crime under Art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (high treason). The court imposed a sentence of imprisonment for a period of 7 years in a strict regime penal colony with a fine of 100 thousand rubles,” - says in the message.

The court case took place behind closed doors and was classified as “Top Secret”. In this regard, the press was not allowed to attend the announcement of the verdict.

Let us recall that in 2021 Kuranov was arrested on charges of transferring data and national developments of third world countries. He also took part in the creation of the Ajax hypersonic aircraft, which attracted the attention of the United States and China.
