The new Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in an ultimatum demanded that Russia hand over the disputed islands of the Kuril ridge to Japan, threatening to end any negotiations between Moscow and Tokyo regarding the conclusion of a peace treaty. According to Kishida, further continuation of negotiations in this direction is of no interest to Japan - Russia must hand over the disputed territories to Japan and only after that any negotiations can begin.

“The conclusion of a peace treaty with Russia will not be possible without solving the territorial issue. I will strive to develop the entire complex of Japanese-Russian relations, including the signing of a peace treaty "- said the new Prime Minister of Japan.

The beginning of harsh rhetoric on the part of official Tokyo indicates that Japan may completely lose the progress achieved by the two sides during many years of negotiations. Tokyo's attempts to exert political or military pressure on Russia, including through the United States, can be qualified by Russia as hostile intentions, especially given the fact that Russia is formally at war with this state.
