Service in the Russian army may increase to two years - decision for Shoigu

Member of the State Duma Committee on Defense, ex-general Andrey Gurulev supported the proposal of Senator Dzhabarov and Deputy Sheremet to change the term of service in the army to two years.

According to Sheremet, the increase in the period of military service up to two years will make it possible to qualitatively train servicemen.

“The current format does not imply high-quality training of a soldier. It is very difficult and problematic to train and prepare during the year. But two years is quite the best option. This is a timely and necessary measure that needs to be implemented as soon as possible to increase the combat readiness of our army.”Sheremet noted.

The proposal was approved by a member of the State Duma Defense Committee, ex-general Andrey Gurulev, who noted that the proposal was very rational.

The Kremlin also commented on such a proposal, however, according to the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, the decision will have to be made by the Minister of Defense.

“The decisive vote is for the Ministry of Defense, it all depends on its requests, but so far it has not made any statements. The [Kremlin] administration does not discuss this.”, - said Dmitry Peskov.

So far, no official comments have been made in the Russian defense department on this matter, however, taking into account NATO expansion, the service can indeed be increased to two years.
