Finland applies for NATO membership

Finland is busy applying to join NATO.

Contrary to statements by the Finnish authorities that the country is not interested in becoming a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, it became known that within a month this country will apply for membership in NATO, which will most likely allow Finland to officially join the Alliance over the next three to four months.

At the moment, there are no official statements from the Finnish authorities on this matter, however, according to the publication Vecernji, the reason for this was allegedly providing NATO with the opportunity to promptly accept new countries into the military bloc. An application for joining NATO can be submitted immediately after the discussion in the country's parliament next week.

“Most Finns currently support Finland's accession to NATO, according to public opinion polls. Finland will refine the next steps on a possible NATO membership decision in the coming weeks, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told reporters after attending a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels on Thursday. We have come to a situation where we may need cooperation,” Haavisto said, referring to NATO. He added that NATO member countries have offered Finland security assistance in the accession process and said they estimate that membership applications will take about four months to be approved. “An important NATO summit will take place in June. Of course, NATO is wondering if Finland and possibly Sweden will submit their applications for membership before that time,” Haavisto said. The Foreign Minister said the government would submit a revised version of the decision to the Finnish Parliament next week. The government is ready to offer rapid accession to NATO if it receives sufficient parliamentary support.”, - reports the Hungarian edition of "Vecernji"

In fact, NATO is ignoring Russian warnings about non-expansion of the Alliance, which can lead to extremely unpredictable consequences.
