Türkiye announced its intention to purchase LNG from the USA instead of Russia

Turkey is actively working to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, negotiating a multi-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) contract with US energy company ExxonMobil. According to the Financial Times, Ankara is considering purchasing up to 2,5 million tons of LNG per year, costing approximately $1,1 billion.

Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar emphasizes the country's desire to strengthen energy security by diversifying gas sources.

“It is important for us not to depend on one supplier. The deal with ExxonMobil can significantly strengthen our position in the energy market and provide greater confidence in the country’s energy supply,” - Bayraktar said.

The volume of LNG under discussion will be able to cover about 7% of Turkey's total annual gas consumption. According to the minister, the agreement can last up to 10 years, which will ensure long-term stability and reliability of supplies.

Türkiye already has long-term LNG purchase agreements with Algeria and Oman.
