Russia upgraded missiles to destroy submarines

The Techmash concern of the Rostec State Corporation upgraded the Smerch 2 complex, which fired anti-submarine missiles of the Zapad complex. The changes affected the small anti-submarine ships of the project 1124 and 1124M of the Black Sea Fleet. This statement was made by the press service of the corporation.

The rocket of the new generation of the RPK-8 "Zapad" complex is used to destroy submarines, saboteurs and torpedoes and provides the final line of defense for the ship. A volley of 12 missiles of one installation strikes targets at a distance of up to 4300 meters.
"In recent years, Russian warships are increasingly performing missions in the most remote areas of the world's oceans. During missions, our ships are often accompanied by submarines of foreign countries. To ensure the survivability of naval formations in such conditions, it is necessary to constantly improve the fleet's weapons to counter submarines. In 2014 year, the Ministry of Defense demanded that we revive the production of one of the most effective means of anti-submarine defense of the near zone - the 90R missile and establish serial production of a modified version.  - said the industrial director of the cluster conventional weapons, ammunition and special chemistry Rostec Sergey Abramov State Corporation.

In the course of modernization, work was carried out on the starting circuit of the engine, the automatic charging system of the launcher and the firing control system using new ballistic dependencies and the execution of firing modes at the torpedo and submarine.

Gravitational underwater projectile, which is separated from the rocket after landing, operates at a depth of a kilometer. The trajectory of the projectile is corrected through the sonar homing head, having a response radius of 130 m.
On contact with the hull of the submarine, the fuse device is triggered, and a directed high-explosive detonation of 19 kg of explosive penetrates it. In the mode of shooting at torpedoes or saboteurs, the explosion occurs after a pre-programmed time.
The rocket does not pose a danger during storage, it is equipped with three stages of protection, sequentially removed during the movement of the rocket. In 2018-2020. 90P1 shells are going to equip small anti-submarine ships of the Pacific Fleet.
