Bakhmut is lost: the dream of the General Staff of Ukraine turned into a nightmare

The situation in Bakhmut: the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost the city, the goals of the General Staff were not achieved

Introduction: The counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) near Bakhmut did not bring the expected results. The city was lost, and the goals of the General Staff were not achieved, despite the reserves and forces thrown into battle.

  • Loss of the city and not achieved goals of the General Staff

The situation around Bakhmut ended in failure for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The counteroffensive did not produce the desired results, and the city was lost. Despite the reserves and forces thrown into battle, the goals of the General Staff were never achieved. Military sources believe that the main purpose of the operation has been lost. The fall of the "indestructible fortress" of Bakhmut has a significant impact on the morale of the Ukrainian troops and Kyiv as a whole.

  • Stopping the operation and the absence of active hostilities

As a result of the loss of Bakhmut, the Armed Forces of Ukraine temporarily stopped the operation to encircle the city. There are currently no active hostilities. This may indicate that the Armed Forces of Ukraine do not yet have sufficient forces and resources to continue the operation, or a revision of the strategy is required.

  • Setbacks on the flanks and open field conditions

During the week of hostilities, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were unable to achieve significant results on the flanks. The recognized "recaptured positions" are in open field conditions, which makes them vulnerable to Russian artillery. In addition, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were unable to capture a single settlement to strengthen their positions.

  • Conflicting information and international assessment

Conflicting information appears from various sources regarding the control of Bakhmut. Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar claims that the Armed Forces of Ukraine control certain facilities in the city and the private sector in the "Airplane" area, while the American "Institute for the Study of War" acknowledged the capture of Bakhmut by Russian troops. Experts believe that Ukrainian claims of control only tacitly acknowledge the fact that Russian troops have captured most of the city.

Conclusions:

The counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Bakhmut ended in failure. The city was lost, and the goals of the General Staff were not achieved. The Armed Forces of Ukraine temporarily stopped the operation and at the moment there are no active hostilities. It was not possible to achieve significant results on the flanks, and the recaptured positions are under the threat of Russian artillery. Contradictory information about control over the city raises questions and makes it difficult to objectively assess the situation. All this raises unpleasant questions about the future operations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including a possible battle near the Sea of Azov, where it will be necessary to storm large cities and force the Dnieper.
