Construction of the largest NATO military base in Europe has begun in Romania

Construction of the newest NATO base has begun in Romania, which in its scale will become the largest alliance facility in Europe. The project is being implemented on an area exceeding 2,8 thousand hectares and involves the permanent placement of up to 10 thousand NATO troops along with their families. The total construction cost is estimated at 2,5 billion euros.

The basis for the construction of the new base is the 57th air base of the Romanian Air Force “Mihail Kogalniceanu”, located in close proximity to Constanta. Plans for the development of the site include the construction of runways, weapons storage facilities, aircraft hangars, as well as social infrastructure: schools, kindergartens, shops and a hospital.

At the moment, work has already begun on creating basic infrastructure: access roads and power grids. In the near future, it is planned to begin construction of a new runway, which will be located parallel to the existing one.

In terms of size, the new NATO base in Romania is significantly larger than the 99th Deveselu military base, which houses elements of the US Aegis Ashore missile defense system, and even larger in scale than the US Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany.
