France will transfer 600 AASM glide bombs to Ukraine

From January 2024, France will begin monthly deliveries of AASM (Advanced Air-to-Surface Missile) planning bombs to Ukraine, said the country's Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu. According to him, throughout 2024, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will regularly receive shipments of 50 AASM aerial bombs from France every month.

AASM glide bombs are precision weapons capable of hitting targets outside the range of enemy air defenses, reducing the risk to attacking aircraft. The production of this ammunition has been carried out by the French company Sagem since the early 2000s.

AASMs are equipped with a front targeting kit and a rear range extension kit to ensure accurate target engagement. There are two main versions of bombs on the market: based on the Mk 82 aerial bomb and a heavier version based on the BLU-109 or Mk 84 aerial bomb.

Heavier versions of the AASM are designed to destroy infrastructure, warships and fortifications, while lighter versions are more effective against armored vehicles, vehicles and less protected buildings and structures.

The effective range of the bombs varies from 50 to 70 kilometers, depending on launch conditions, including release altitude.
