Japan will allocate $37 million to Ukraine

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa announced that Japan will contribute $37 million (5,3 billion yen) to the NATO fund to provide Ukraine with drone detection systems. This statement was made during a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba in Kyiv, where Kamikawa arrived on Sunday.

During Kamikawa's visit to Kyiv, issues of support for Ukraine, a joint conference on the restoration of the country, ways to achieve a just and lasting peace, as well as a ceremony to transfer large-scale energy equipment to Ukraine were discussed. Negotiations were also planned with Ukrainian leaders, including President Vladimir Zelensky and Prime Minister Denis Shmygal.

This visit is Kamikawa's first as Japan's Foreign Minister and continues Japan's active participation in international support for Ukraine. The visit underscores Japan's position to continue supporting Ukraine amid global aid fatigue.

Japan's move comes in the context of tensions with Russia, which previously sent a note to NATO countries over arms sales to Ukraine, saying that any arms shipments to Ukraine would be considered a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Federation also expressed the opinion that NATO arms supplies to Ukraine have a negative impact on the negotiations and the general situation in the region.
