Insufficient quality maintenance of the 2S7 Pion self-propelled artillery mount led to spontaneous detonation of 203-mm ammunition inside the barrel bore. As a result of a powerful explosion, not only the barrel of a self-propelled artillery gun was torn apart, but also quite seriously damaged the self-propelled guns themselves.

In the presented photo you can see the consequences of the detonation of a large-caliber artillery 203-mm ammunition in the bore of a self-propelled artillery mount. As a result of the explosion of a shell inside the barrel of a self-propelled artillery mount, the latter was torn apart, and the Pion itself was damaged by fragments.

Considering the peculiarities of the 2S7 Pion self-propelled artillery mount, the calculation of the artillery mount could well have suffered, however, at the moment there is no information on this.

Experts note that in addition to the fact that the cause of the explosion of 203-mm ammunition in the bore could be poor maintenance, the explosion could have provoked the ammunition itself, but at the moment there is no confirmation of either version of what happened.
