Germany has only 20 thousand shells of 155 mm caliber left, with a minimum rate of 230 thousand

Germany is faced with a shortage of 155 mm NATO-style artillery shells. As Spiegel notes, today there are only about 20 thousand units of such ammunition left in the country, while the standards of the alliance suggest the accumulation of 230 thousand shells by 2031.

The acute shortage of ammunition is due not only to their general shortage, but also to current supplies to Ukraine. Germany, as an active member of NATO, takes part in the military support of Ukraine in the current conflict, which leads to significant expenditures on ammunition.

In response to the current situation, the German Ministry of Defense plans to make large-scale purchases of artillery shells to make up for their shortage. Details of this plan, including possible sources of supplies and volumes of purchases, have not yet been disclosed. However, it is clear that in order to meet NATO standards and maintain the operational readiness of the troops, the country will have to make significant investments in ammunition.
