First of all, the Boeing 737-800 was developed to replace the Boeing 737-400 passenger airliner included in the Classic series. Today the direct competitor for the Boeing 737-800 is a passenger narrow-body aircraft Airbus A320.

Work on the Boeing 737-800 airliner began on September 5, 1994. The project was originally named the 737-400X Stretch, indicating its predecessor aircraft. Later, the project received the current designation -737-800.

The largest order for the 737-800 airliners came from the Irish airline Ryanair, one of the largest low-cost airlines in Europe. Today, 299 Boeing 737-800 aircraft are in operation in the operator's fleet. These Ryanair aircraft have a single-class, economical cabin layout, designed for 189 passenger seats.
